The Israeli government wasn’t so keen on us having a pride parade, but apparently the jig is up, they actually want more Gay Jews in Jerusalem. It’s an incredibly cheesy campaign, but what did you expect?
New ‘pink Jerusalem’ campaign aimed at promoting gay tourism in capital and partly sponsored by state, angers religious legislators who threaten no-confidence motion over issue
A new ad campaign put together by the Israeli Tourism Ministry meant to attract gay and lesbian visitors to the Holy Land has angered religious lawmakers, with the right-wing National Union party threatening to file a no-confidence motion to the Knesset, according to Ynet News.
“It is particularly important that the status of lesbian and gay relationships will be equal to that of heterosexual couples and will be recognised as full Jewish marriages or kiddushin,” it said in a statement on Wednesday.
I couldn’t be more excited to let you know that GayGevalt now has over 570 events on our calendar! That’s an amazing and growing number. Thank you to everyone who has posted events, and to everyone that uses GayGevalt to find events.
The new site launched last week and response has been fantastic. We believe the design rocks, and comments have echoed our sentiments. But more importantly, the site is easier to use and people are responding. More people are joining the email list, visits to 2+ pages have been rising, and visitors to this blog have been slowly increasing.
There are more features on the way, to stay tuned!
Bravo! Brava! Bravissima! to Rabbi Josh Lesser, who was bestowed the Georgia Center for Nonprofits’ Revolutions Leadership Award last week. Reb Lesser founded Atlanta’s Rainbow Center, a research and support center for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered folk that’s managed by the local Jewish Family and Career Services and sponsored by Lesser’s Reconstructionist and GLBT-welcoming congregation Bet Haverim (House of Friends).
Miri on myspace is excited about finding a Gay Synagogue in Dallas, Texas. Living in NY, with CBST and so many open and welcoming shuls, it’s easy to forget how great it was to first discover these places. Thanks for reminding us Miri. Perhaps, Miri, you will share your experience with us?
Oh this is SO COOL!!! I found a gay synagogue in Dallas!! Congregation El Binah– they are apparently tiny– but I think the next time I’m in Dallas I’m gonna try to hit a service. That is just so cool…
Some off you may remember Queer Duck, The Jewish Homosexual Duck. I got the urge and so I’m posting one of my favorite episodes. This would be a good post for Coming Out Day, but I don’t have the patience. Enjoy!
Did you know that one in six hate crimes are motivated by the
victim’s sexual orientation, and yet today’s federal laws don’t
include any protections for these Americans? What’s even more
outrageous is that the radical right is running an all-out
campaign to stop Congress from expanding hate crimes laws to
include sexual orientation and gender identity -something three
out of four Americans support.
Juddy Gold turned her life experience into a project to disccuver what it means to be a Jewish mama, and then turned that into a one-woman show called “25 Questions for jewish Mother” (my Jewish mother has seen it twice.) Now The Upper West Side Jewish Lesbian Comedian Mother has turned the show into a book.
Judy Gold’s new book “25 Questions For A Jewish Mother,” adapted from her one-woman show of the same name, attempts to shed some light on one of the most storied and misunderstood social archetypes: the Jewish mother. A lesbian with two children, Gold’s struggle for acceptance from her own mother led her on a quest to understand Jewish matriarchs.
Here’s another place to go to take online actions for the good of the gays. The Aguda, Israel’s national LGBTQ union based in Tel Aviv, now has an online action center… there is LGBTQ activism to be done outside of the US. Find some off it here.
In all of his time in office, President Bush has only vetoed two bills. his third? The Hate Crimes bill of course! The administration say no no no to including sexual orientation in the hate crimes bill, which currently covers religion, race, color, and national origin.
There has always been a question as to whether motivation should have an effect on the punishment, but since it currently does in this country through the existing hate crimes legislation, should sexual orientation be included?
